About Us

The Serpent Golf Society was founded on 26 January 1993 over a beer or two in the Stamford Arms in Bowdon, Cheshire.

The original aim of society was to create an opportunity for members to meet twice a year on designated weekends to escape the rigours of professional life, relax and reminisce but most importantly challenge for a coveted trophy. On that very evening of 26 January 1993, the Serpent Golf Society was born with the motto ‘Who Cares Who Wins’. This motto initially reflected the then fun, young and care-free approach of members – but has since become an ironic phrase where every member wishes to step up and embrace the now legendary Serpent Trophy and don the famous green jacket.

The gauntlet for the first Serpent was thrown down on the shores of North Wales at Nefyn and District Golf Club on 18-20 June 1993. The 12 initial members, Jeremey Plastow (Captain), Myles Cooper (Secretary), Graham Yates (Treasurer), Stephen Perrett, Richard Holden, Christian James, Jon Abbott, Jonathan Holden, Tom Sandys-Wynch, Paul Owen, Jimmy Clarkson and Nick Buckley all fought to win the inaugural tournament. Fittingly won by the instigator of the society, Myles Cooper, the Serpents Golf Society was truly off and running.

31 years on the society stands proud boasting 36 members – all of whom are jointly proud to associate themselves with one of the leading, most entertaining and unpredictable UK golf societies.
